Each year Ascension Lutheran School provides a wide variety of special activities and events for students.
Academic Competitions Ascension competes with other Lutheran schools in the area in an annual Bible Bowl, Spell Bowl, and Cup-Stacking Tournament.
Assemblies Each year we offer a variety of interesting, educational school assemblies that include plays, fine arts programs, health and safety presentations, and hands-on science activities. For example, during our Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration, a Lincoln impersonator spoke to us and students tried to “Stump the President” with questions they had previously researched.
Grandparents Day Each year we invite our grandparents and others to come to school, visit our classrooms, and enjoy a school-wide assembly.
Field Day During the last week of school our PALS sponsor a school-wide outdoor field day. We usually start with a picnic lunch. Then we divide all students into three teams, which compete in such fun activities as a water balloon toss, sack races, and a Frisbee throw.
NEILS Music and Art Festival As a part of our National Lutheran Schools Celebration, Ascension joins with twenty other area Lutheran schools in this Saturday event that showcases our students’ fine arts and musical abilities. All schools display art projects made by preschool through eighth grade students. Students also have the opportunity to create a work of art during the festival. Instrumental and vocal ensembles are judged for their performances. The festival concludes with an area-wide band concert.
Preschool Christmas Program Each year the preschool classes present the Christmas story through recitations and music. Parents and others are invited to attend.
School Musical Every other year, all grades preschool through grade eight presents a musical, in which students have the opportunity to sing and dance on stage.
School Talent Show Every other year, all classes perform on stage along with individuals and groups from the school and congregation.
Spelling Bee Students in grades five through eight prepare for the annual spelling bee by studying on-line word lists. In January, all interested students compete in a school-wide bee.
Then winner of our school bee competes in the Allen County Spelling Bee.
Speech Contest Each fall students in grades five through eight prepare for our school-wide speech contest by choosing a topic, researching it, writing and revising the speech, and then presenting the speech in the classroom. Teachers select the best speeches to be given in a school-wide assembly or evening program.
Veterans’ Day Each year Ascension honors our veterans through a variety of activities. Students do artwork, write letters, and make cards and Valentines to give to area veterans and those presently serving in the military. We also always host an assembly on or near Veterans’ Day in which we honor veterans through music, speeches, and special presentations.
Awards Day and Closing Service On the last day of school we recognize the achievements of all our students through our Awards Day. Parents, grandparents and others are welcome to attend.
